Friday’s Fave Five

FFF snowflakes

So the first week of 2010 is behind us and now it’s time to look back and remember 5 of our favorite things from that week.  Head on over to Living to Tell the Story to see links to more posts like this.   And then do a post of your own – it’s a great way to focus on the good.

1. Dinner – We are doing so good at cooking and eating at home for dinner.  It was interesting to me when we all first realized that we actually prefer that over Eating Out as that seems like such an event. But at home it’s relaxing, prayerful and so good. Plus you get leftovers for lunch the next day!

2. Prayer – Speaking of prayerful, in yesterday’s Bible reading I read again about the Lord’s Prayer and that got me to thinking. Maybe once in a while instead of praying before our meal we could say that prayer together. Last night was the first time we did it and I stumbled on the words twice – and then got the giggles.  I was absolutely mortified! Worse yet was once I got the giggles it got Lynne’ going too.  Maybe this isn’t always going to work for us.

And now it got me to thinking of inappropriate giggles. I’ve probably shared this story before, but many years ago a lady I worked with lost her son. My boss and I attended the funeral and as we were leaving she walked with purpose up to a door, opened it and discovered it was a broom closet. We both started giggling and scurried out as quick as we could. What is it about things like that that can make you laugh – nerves maybe?

3. Corner Gas – Last night we finished watching Disc One of Season One of this show.  The three of us watching it together, and laughing so hard, is great. The show is from Canada and it has a rather dry, almost deadpan humor – and that is so totally my family.

And this is a perfect example of why reading the Friday Fave Fives is a good thing.  I first read about this show on somebody’s blog and ordered the first disc from Netflix. I’m sure we’ll order all the others as much as we’ve enjoyed it.

4. Knitting – My word have I been knitting! And actually I’ve finished the knitting part of several projects that are just sitting here waiting on me to weave in ends or do a seam. I enjoy it so much and it’s so relaxing for me to sit and knit and watch a movie or tv show. I’m thankful for the opportunity to enjoy my hobbies.

5. January – There are few things I enjoy more than holidays with my family, but that also means January soon follows. What I like best about January is looking towards an entire year just waiting to be filled in. Yes I do make goals/resolutions, though that doesn’t mean I always keep them. But I have always had the theory that if I didn’t at least try then I’m doing nothing to improve myself. I just read a quote yesterday that said “If you fail to plan you plan to fail” and that struck a chord with me. I definitely do not want to plan to fail (!), so I will be refining my plan over the next few days.

  1. I have to admit I do like to eat out -- it's my only real time "off." But I do like some of favorite dishes at home, too.

I think I have heard of Corner Gas, but never seen it. It sounds fun.

I don't knit, but I want to get back to my cross-stitching.

I like your philosophy in #5!

  3. Inappropriate giggles. ;D ha! I had a set of those in the middle of a wedding ceremony, right in the middle of the vows. No good reason, really, except that a friend leaned over and whispered something in my ear that set me off. Whoops!

Fun list and congrats on your dinners at home!

    Happy FFF to you!

  4. Dinner at home most nights makes Eating Out much more fun when you do go. I cook nearly every night -- and we are healthier for it, too.

  5. Hey There! Just visiting around on this Friday Fav Five.

My family and I are usually around the table for supper almost every night. It is a wonderful habit to get into. You will not regrett it.

As for giggling during prayer. God loves a good belly laugh, my small group and I have been praying together for mor years that I can count and I can't tell ya the times we have busted out in laughter during our prayr time. God grants us the gift of humor and he appreciates it, he gave us the abilty to fnd humor in all things and I feel certian that he giggle right along with us.

I have just recently learned how to knit. I have been crcheting for a while now, I am a member of a Prayer Shawl group at our church and we knit and crochet shawls, chemo caps and other things for those in need in our congragation and community. I took a leap of faith and knitted scarves for all my friends and family members for Christmas. I had to start back in September to make sure I could get them all done.

    Happy Friday Fav Five
    Blessings

  6. Ahh the dreaded inappropriate giggle...ya gotta love it! Sorry maybe I shouldn't be encouraging you that way. It really is true that eating at home is so much easier especially if you have kids. I love leftovers! Have a great weekend..

  7. I love to cook so I don't mind eating in at all but I like to out as a treat. Ideally once a week I like to have someone else doing the cooking and cleaning up.

Inappropriate giggles. I think it is nerves. I've never thought to say the Lord's prayer as a grace. Good idea!

  8. Giggles-- yup, nerves. I think we all do it.

Oh, I love to knit. Seriously, I'm knitting RIGHT NOW. Because I knit all the time, I love to hear that others are joining the sorority and fraternity!

Have a happy weekend, eating in!

  9. This is the first time I've visited your blog. I loved Quaker Summer, and your dog is PRECIOUS!

Interesting, a teacher's perspective on January. You said it's an entire year waiting to be filled in...I see it as a year halfway done -- closer to the freedom of summer!

  10. well I must admit my fave five list would NEVER have January on it. then again i live in NYS where we have bitter cold but hardly any snow (capital region). January drags for me....but...I am with ya on the praying.....good stuff. and we are eating out less as a family as well and I really like to cook so am trying new recipes this winter.
    enjoy the weekend!

  11. I love that quote. I heard it from Dave Ramsey with Financial Peace. It says so much. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Thanks for the reminder.

  12. I'm so glad you are enjoying Corner Gas! We've finished 3 seasons...I think my favorite little scene is in Season one...in the Tax Man episode - where Oscar is fooling with the camera and it flashes in his face. Makes me laugh just thinking of it.

Speaking of laughter....even 'inappropriate' giggles are a good thing! Laughter is good medicine, and as someone has already said - comes from the Creator Himself.

    Have a blessed week!

  13. It's so hard when those giggles come at inappropriate times. It happens often to me too.
One of my very favorite songs is "The Lord's Prayer."

Speaking of the Lord's Prayer, and getting tickled at the wrong time....my friend and I attended a wedding at a Catholic church. We are both Baptist and when we recite the Lord's prayer at our church we say the entire prayer. I'm not that familiar with Catholicism, but when it got to the part just after "and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil" my friend and I kept saying out loud "for thine is the kingdom...." and everyone else had stopped after the word "evil." I'm still not sure why, but we got tickled and couldn't quit laughing.

I wish I lived close to you so you could teach me how to knit. :)

    Enjoy your weekend.
    Love,
    Valerie

  14. I get it! During my sweet uncle's funeral several years ago, my stomach growled loudly during a quiet part of the service. I was sitting by my 2 sister in laws, and that was all it took. We had to stifle giggles the rest of the service. LOL

    Happy New Year!
